What is your role at Capernaum?
I am a registered dietitian and can see patients for a variety of needs including food allergies and intolerances, failure to thrive/underweight, GI conditions, disordered eating, pre-diabetes/insulin resistance, tube feeding (including a home-made blended formula), and vegetarian/vegan diets.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I initially became a dietitian out of my desire to help others heal their relationships with food and their bodies. My food philosophy is rooted in the Intuitive Eating lens, and I am greatly influenced by Ellyn Satter’s work on the “Division of Responsibility” for parents’ role in a child’s feeding journey. I’m very excited to now work alongside caregivers and kiddos to hopefully bring more ease to feeding and nourishment in their lives.
Schooling and background:
Fun fact – I was born and raised in Iowa! I graduated from Iowa State University in 2012 and completed my dietetic internship the same year. I’ve worked in a variety of settings including long-term care, schools, grocery stores, and different levels of care within an eating disorder treatment facility. But ever since my 4-week internship rotation at Children’s Hospital in Omaha, pediatrics has always been a passion I wanted to return to.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
My son is on the autism spectrum, and he has benefited so much from speech, OT, and PT through his school and IEP. When I learned about Capernaum and the children/families we serve, I immediately felt drawn toward this work. I’m inspired to help add joy to families by using my nutrition expertise as an addition to the wonderful multidisciplinary teams already present.
What is something you look forward to working at Capernaum?
I am so excited to help grow the Tube Optimization Program! I’m also eager to create and build rapport with the children, families, and fellow coworkers.
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
I love hanging out with my son and husband, watching our favorite shows and movies, or walking around arts/craft fairs in the cities. In my own free time, I love deepening my own yoga/meditation practice, reading, writing, and listening to podcasts.
