ABOUT CAPERNAUM
Staff Bios

HANNAH A., OT
What is your role at Capernaum?
I serve as an occupational therapist in the clinic, schools, homes, and community sites.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
Occupational therapy was first introduced to me as a career in which you get to play all day long. After learning more about the career, I realized that play was an amazing tool to help kids thrive and reach their full potential. I saw other facets of occupational therapy – the holistic approach, the collaboration among professionals, the opportunity for lifelong learning, and the emphasis on the intrinsic value of every human, and I was hooked.
Educational background:
I attended the University of Northwestern, St. Paul, for my undergraduate degree in Health Sciences (2015). After a gap year working as a developmental trainee in an autism center and as a care provider in a group home, I attended St. Catherine University, where I received my master’s degree in occupational therapy (2018). Since then, I have worked as a pediatric occupational therapist.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
When reading about Capernaum, I loved the organization’s mission and vision. After visiting the clinic, I was impressed by the ways I observed the team living out the vision and mission. The emphasis on family, integrity, faith, and the value of excellence in care was evident, even after just a few conversations. I am incredibly excited to be here.
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
If my afternoon is free, I enjoy spending time with people I love. This may look like exploring parks and trails with friends, cooking with my husband, or hosting a game night. When it gets extra icy and dark outside, you might also find me curled up with a good book and a hot cup of tea.

ABBY B., OT
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am the home-based program supervisor and coordinator. I also treat infants and children in their homes or daycare settings.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I chose to become an occupational therapist after volunteering in a special education classroom during my senior year in high school. I was drawn to the profession because it seemed like a wonderful mix of art, psychology, and medicine. I have always worked in pediatrics and find it very rewarding.
Educational background:
I have a BS in occupational therapy from the University of MN and am a continuing ed. junkie!
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
I love home visiting and strongly believe it is the best setting for providing treatment to children with complex medical needs. I started working at Capernaum in 2009 after the home-based program I headed up was discontinued at Courage Center. Capernaum is one of the few agencies in the Twin Cities that provide therapy services in the home.
Share a favorite story while working at Capernaum.
After working in the community for 25+ years, I have often been recognized by previous clients and their families. Just recently, a mom was videotaping while I was working with her child (only my hands were visible), and she posted it on a social media site. A minute later, another mom of a child I had worked with years ago saw the video, recognized my voice, and posted that she missed me and thought I was a great therapist… how cool is that!
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
Spending time with my family and our goofball dog. It doesn’t really matter what we are doing as long as were together. That’s the best!

ALI B., OT/Executive Director
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am an occupational therapist at Franklin Center and Spectrum High School, and I provide home-based services. I am also the Executive Director at Capernaum, which requires me to wear many hats each week to help therapists serve kids and families.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
The OT field kept presenting itself to me in different ways, and each time I became more interested. My mother-in-law is a pediatric OT, and she really encouraged me to go for it. She made it look so fun!
Share a favorite story while working at Capernaum.
I’ve been with Capernaum since 2001, so I have many “favorites.” The best story was on my 40th birthday when Capernaum coordinated a flash mob for me! They included my husband, parents, and 92-year-old grandmother! It was AWESOME!
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
I love being on our boat with my family, exploring and fishing. I also enjoy watching my two boys do their sports and activities.

EVA B., SLP
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am a speech-language pathologist at various community sites and schools.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I always knew I wanted to work with children and thought I wanted to be a teacher, but I didn’t like the idea of big classes. Speech allowed me to be a teacher while giving each child the attention and dedication they deserve. Getting to play games and flexing my Disney knowledge are extra bonuses!
Educational background:
I received a BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and an MS in CSD from St. Cloud State University.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
I love that Capernaum is very family-oriented for both clients and staff. Their mission aligns with my values and beliefs as a therapist, highlighting the importance of functionality, determining what they truly need at that moment, and understanding that these needs and priorities may change over time.
What is your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
I love spending time with friends and family, whether it’s a picnic in the garage or board games in the basement. However, once my social battery runs out, you’ll find me on the couch under a fuzzy blanket watching Disney movies or binge-watching a comfort show I’ve already seen 10+ times.

VALERIE C., SLP
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am a speech-language pathologist providing services for children at two community sites and in the clinic.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I always wanted to work with children in some capacity. I found my passion for speech pathology when I was working with a kiddo whose speech pathologist came into the preschool where I was an assistant teacher. She gave me strategies to help this little girl communicate more in the classroom, and I found myself wanting to have the same ability to help kids grow and succeed by supporting their families and teachers as well.
Educational background:
I received my bachelor’s degree in Child Development and Communication Disorders from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I moved to Minnesota and received my master’s degree in Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences from the University of Minnesota.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
I love Capernaum’s mission to help children and families find joy in their journey. I believe that communication is a constant journey, and the only way to stay motivated to keep growing is to find joy in every part of it.
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
I love spending time with my family, playing with our dog, being outside, baking, or planning our next trip.

KRISTI D., PT
What is your role at Capernaum?
I teach the adapted dance classes through Capernaum.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I received physical therapy in elementary school after injuring my ankle, which sparked my interest in the field. I began volunteering at a therapy clinic in a hospital and through adapted sports. When I started PT school, I thought I would work in sports medicine, but I ended up really liking pediatrics. Working with children is always exciting. We work with such a diverse group of kids, and we’re always problem-solving to help the child and family. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the joy on a child’s face and in the family when a child does something new.
Educational background:
Undergrad at UW-La Crosse in Biology with a minor in Spanish / Master’s at UW-La Crosse in Physical Therapy. Currently working on my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at St. Scholastica.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
I was working for a school district in Wisconsin when my mom saw an ad for a job at Capernaum. I was considering moving back to the Twin Cities, so I applied. After my interview, I thought it just seemed right. Capernaum cares about its staff and the families they serve.

We had our first dance recital at the old Edina clinic. We started with only three kids, so we set out a couple of rows of chairs. We had such an amazing turnout that many people were standing. I did not realize how many lives those kids touched and how many people would come to support them.
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
Free afternoon? What is that? With going to school and having a kid, there are few sports. I enjoy running or hanging out with my daughter.

LEAH D., SLP
What is your role at Capernaum?

Why did you choose to become a therapist?
As a young child, I received speech-language services, and once I got older, I realized the impact it had on my life. It gave me the passion and desire to help children improve their own communication skills.
Educational background:
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Baylor University. Then I went on to complete my master’s degree at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

I am honored to have received the opportunity to be a part of a community whose main priority is serving and helping others.

I enjoy spending my free time scrapbooking, sewing, or reading. I also love going rock climbing, hiking, paddleboarding, and swing dancing with my husband and friends.

DANA F., OT
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am an occupational therapist serving in the clinic and homes.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
As a child, I used to attend community programs with my mother. From these programs, I came to learn the challenges that many children experienced, especially those who had an illness or disability. From that moment on, I realized I wanted to make a difference in a child’s life. I originally thought becoming a neurologist would be the right path, but after observing an occupational therapist, I realized it would allow me to make a difference in a child’s life and be part of every milestone they reached.
Educational background:
I attended Marquette University for my undergraduate studies. I received my Doctor of Occupational Therapy degree from Creighton University.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
I wanted to expand my clinical skills and serve children from diverse backgrounds, which is exactly what Capernaum offered me.
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
My favorite way to spend a free afternoon would be with my dog.

JENNY F., Operations Manager
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am the Operations Manager and part of the Leadership Team! Some of my duties include running our corporate office, handling the billing and accounts receivable, bookkeeping, HR, and other miscellaneous items.
How did you discover Capernaum?
Upon graduating from college in 2010, I moved up to the Twin Cities and was looking for a part-time job before starting graduate school. While browsing the Star Tribune, I came across a 16-hour-per-week administrative assistant position with Capernaum. After being offered the job, my role and responsibilities quickly changed to full-time status. I deferred my graduate school start date for a variety of reasons, and the rest is history! My role and responsibilities with Capernaum have continued to evolve since 2010.
Educational background:
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, with minors in Spanish and Not-for-Profit Management.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
Initially, my desire was to help people and to use my administrative skills. That quickly developed into a passion for the incredible kiddos and families we serve, and for the fact that I could still make a huge impact in their lives, even from behind the scenes!
Share a favorite story while working at Capernaum.
My favorite story about working for Capernaum is actually hearing all the stories from our therapists! My heart overflows with joy when a therapist says to me, “You’ll never guess what so-and-so did today!” We celebrate everything – there is nothing too small to be thankful for!
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
In the summer, it’s being outside as much as possible – typically either walking/hiking or playing disc golf. When the weather gets cold (and anything under 65 degrees is cold to me), you’ll find me cooking or baking, doing yoga and exercising, playing the clarinet, piano, and/or flute, or watching a TV show with my cat, Augustus!

ROBYN G., OT
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am an occupational therapist working in home-based care, with the hope of adding some aquatic therapy.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I was interested in the medical field and had the chance to shadow a variety of therapists through volunteer work, which drew me to occupational therapy. OT felt like it encompassed a wide variety of settings and populations, all of which helped others complete the things they wanted to do every day! I knew I wanted to work with kids after shadowing a pediatric OT. I loved that the day was filled with meaningful play, which is hard to say about many other careers!
Educational background:
I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for an undergraduate degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and Global Health. I went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for my Master’s in Occupational Therapy.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
I have spent time in inpatient and outpatient settings in my career, and I loved that Capernaum offered multiple settings to see children. I really have an interest in providing care in the natural environment, and this felt like a great fit! I was excited about Capernaum’s passion and mission, which resonated with me.
What is your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
I enjoy spending free time with friends and family, exploring the outdoors, having game nights, trying new restaurants, reading, and trying new yoga classes.

I chose to become a therapist because I’ve always enjoyed working with children, and while completing my undergraduate degree, I realized I wanted to pursue some form of therapy with children. I was introduced to occupational therapy during undergrad when I visited a sensory gym and was hooked! My favorite way to spend a free afternoon is with my loved ones, snuggling up under a blanket and reading a good book, or watching a movie from one of my favorite genres — comedy or psychological thriller.

CINDY J., OT
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am an occupational therapist at the clinic and a community site.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I had a background providing direct home services to both children with disabilities and older adults, so I liked that I could potentially continue working with people of all ages as an OT. It also really fits well that the OT’s focus is on meaningful activities; I strongly believe that we, as humans, are meant to learn and interact with our world as “doers,” and that meaningful activities enhance everyone’s quality of life!
Education background:
I received my master’s in occupational therapy at the University of Minnesota. Being an OT has indeed allowed me to work with people of all ages. I have practiced in home care with older adults, taught energy conservation courses to persons with multiple sclerosis as a part of a research project, and I teach an undergraduate course introducing students to the field of occupational therapy. Most of my practice background, however, has been with children and young adults in the school-based setting.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
I have a friend who retired after many years of working for Capernaum, and she always had wonderful things to say!
What is your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
With my family (people and dog), in nature, and/or in the midst of travel to new, exciting places around the globe.

ANNAMARIE J., OTA
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA) working in schools.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I always knew I wanted a job helping kids. After volunteering with Capernaum back in 2013, I decided that occupational therapy was the right field for me! I love working with kids in small-group settings to help them achieve their greatest independence in school and in life.
Educational background:
I graduated from Winona State University in 2013 with a bachelor’s in Exercise Science and a minor in Nutrition. After that, I volunteered and was eventually on-boarded as a patient services coordinator for Capernaum from 2013-2016. I finally returned to school in 2019, attending Herzing University, and graduated in 2020 with an Associate of Occupational Therapy Assistant degree. I started working in pediatrics right away at an ABA clinic, where I stayed for 1.5 years. Then I transitioned back to Capernaum this year (2022) to focus more on working in a school setting!
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
Working with Capernaum in the past, I knew this was a company that not only values its employees but truly emphasizes caring for its clients, meeting each individual where they’re at, and making the journey to greater independence fun!
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
I love spending time at home with my family and my dogs, preferably reading a book, or enjoying a really nice weather day (75 and sunny for me!). Or you can find me on the weekends, typically having brunch with my friends.

What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?

What is your role at Capernaum?
I provide OT services at Kaleidoscope school, and I plan to build a day of home therapy.

Educational background:
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science at Mankato State University. I earned my Master of Science in Occupational Therapy at The College of St. Scholastica.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
I come from outpatient pediatric experience. I learned a lot over the past five years, but I also learned how important I feel it is for me to help kiddos in their daily environments, like school and home! Also, I was looking for a job with more flexibility for my family as we grew to a family of two in January!
What is your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
Socializing with family and friends! I love being outdoors, sitting by a fire, or going on a hike!

LYNNE O., OT
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am a home-based and school-based occupational therapist.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
When I started thinking about a career, I considered interior design and therapy. I ultimately decided upon occupational therapy because I liked the creativity we could use, and I realized I wanted to help people and make a difference in people’s lives.
Educational background:
I graduated with a BA from the College of St. Catherine’s. I’m married with two amazing boys, and I have been working on/off (between breaks to be a stay-at-home mom when my kids were little) for almost 20 years.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
I was looking for a summer on-call job (YEARS AGO) and was hired by Capernaum. When I quit my full-time job to become a mom 15 years ago, I remained on call at Capernaum for a while, took some time off, and then gradually moved to part-time as my kiddos grew. I have always loved and appreciated how family-oriented and supportive Capernaum has been!

I never made it to the office very often, but when I did, I always received a warm welcome and a hug from Bonna and Marcia (the previous co-owner). They always made me feel special and welcome in our “family” at Capernaum.
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
That’s a hard one! I’d have to pick between painting (or some type of art project), baking, or hanging out outside with my family!

BONNA O., PT/Clinical Director
What is your role at Capernaum?
It is hard to describe my role at Capernaum. I am a physical therapist, and I treat a little. As far as administration goes, I wear many hats, and any hat without a person, I will try to wear, too! Hopefully, my role is to encourage, make wise decisions, lead, and live out Capernaum’s philosophy, mission, and motto in my work/interactions.
What made you choose to become a therapist?
I chose to become a physical therapist because it is a medical field with one-on-one interactions where I can encourage, educate, and assist someone in their physical improvement/recovery. I love how personal it is.
Educational background:
I graduated from the College of St. Scholastica with a BA in Physical Therapy.
What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
Marcia Mattson and I began working together in 1981. I had just graduated from PT school, and she had already been a therapist for several years. We began working in a group home. I was employed by the group home, and she came in to provide direct services. The Lord kept expanding our opportunities to provide therapy at different sites. In 1988, we both wanted more time with our families and more flexibility, so we incorporated as Capernaum Pediatric Physical Therapy, Inc., and focused solely on growing Capernaum. It wasn’t long, and we were also providing occupational and speech therapy services, so we changed our name to Capernaum Pediatric Therapy, Inc. in the early 1990s. We continued to grow as the Lord opened doors. It has been an amazing adventure. Marcia is now retired, and we sold our clinics, but God still has plans for Capernaum. Our home-based, school, and community site services continue to grow!
Share a favorite story while working at Capernaum.
Since I have been in this field for so long, I have many favorite stories. Most recently, two different moms found me (one in a store and one at church) and told me how well their children were doing, and that it was because of Capernaum’s services. One even quoted words I had spoken to her long ago! That was powerful and reminded me of the influence we have to encourage and lift others up. Another favorite story is when one of my little ones received her very own walker. She was outside walking, and her words were, “This is amazing! I am amazing!” Nothing better than that!
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
If I could do anything, I would gather my adult children and their spouses or significant others, go on a hike or bike ride by the water, eat at an outdoor restaurant for dinner, and just sit, laugh, and chat about crazy things!

GINA R., OT
What is your role at Capernaum?
I am an occupational therapist who works with children in home-based, school, and community sites.
Why did you choose to become a therapist?
As a child, my mom was a caregiver to many people with disabilities and would take me to work with her, so I became comfortable around many people of all abilities. In high school, I worked in a day program and residence for people with developmental disabilities, and saw many facets of OT in these settings, and loved what they were doing with the clients/residents. As I learned more about OT’s philosophy of helping people become more independent in their daily activities and about OT’s roots in mental health, I knew it was the right career for me.
Educational background:

What made you desire to become a Capernaum team member?
As a public school therapist, I had heard about Capernaum. I had read many reports from a Capernaum therapist and was impressed with the therapist’s skills with children. When I interviewed, what really caught my attention was the opportunity to work in many areas of OT, such as school, clinic, community, and home-based settings. I also knew I would get the support and guidance I needed as I grew my skills into areas of OT that were new to me.

I have so many! The amount of support and kindness I have received from everyone I work with is beyond amazing. Next would be working with a high schooler on life skills so she can live independently when she graduates. The special ed teacher and administrator have said that since I started working with her, she has been showing up to school (after being chronically absent and having difficulty in school, even though she is very smart) and has a spring in her step. Then there is seeing my home-based little ones meet milestones for the first time when I am with them. It’s all so rewarding!
What’s your favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
I love to travel (I love road trips); be outside, especially grilling or by a bonfire with family and friends; swim in Lake Superior or any lake; take walks with my dog, Georgia; binge-watch TV; and eat new foods to me ( I recently tried Korean and Ethiopian foods for the first time…both delicious!).

One of my favorite recent stories comes after weeks of not being able to see kids in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During my first telehealth session with a client working on feeding, his computer screen turned, and he immediately said, “It’s my Kristin! I’ve missed you and can’t wait to have a picnic today.” We proceeded to include the whole family in our therapeutic picnic. I had my own plate of food at home, and we took turns trying new things. It was so fun and one of our most successful sessions so far!

Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I have known all my life that I wanted to work in health care in some way, but I wasn’t sure how until I got a taste of the profession as a patient with a knee injury. Doing some research and shadowing in multiple settings led me to pediatric physical therapy, where I immediately fell in love with the idea of using play to help kids reach milestones and fully engage with their environment. I have always found joy in spending time with children and feel blessed that my job gives me that opportunity every day.

Why did you choose to become a therapist?
While growing up, I knew I wanted an active job while also helping people. Physical therapy was the perfect mix of being active myself and helping people be active themselves! After my first observation of pediatric PT during my clinical experiences in school, I fell in love with it! There is nothing better than helping an infant, toddler, or child achieve a new motor milestone to become more independent. The joy I see spread across kiddos’ faces and their caregivers’ when they achieve something new for the first time is why I do what I do!
Educational background:
I attended the University of Massachusetts Lowell for part of my undergraduate studies. I finished my undergraduate studies and graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of North Dakota. I spent the first 5.5 years of my career in a pediatric clinic setting and now serve patients in their communities and homes.
